From the Author
In March 2013, the men of 2nd Ranger Battalion headed over the Cascade mountain range of Washington State for two weeks of marksmanship and maneuver ranges at Yakima Training Center (YTC). As their chaplain, I deployed with the battalion and provided worship times for the guys (including Good Friday and Easter services) in a dusty, OD green, canvas tent beneath the roar of a diesel generator several miles from the cantonment area. Early on April 2nd, I loaded up my gear and headed back through the pass en route to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, near Tacoma. It was a gorgeous drive. As the waking sun peaked over the horizon, the valley floor sparkled like an emerald, signaling the arrival of spring. Climbing from gentle foothills to rugged mountainsides, I thanked God both for the successful training and the beauty that now engulfed me. Soon I found myself thanking him for the men who willingly endure difficult conditions and long deployments, some suffering severe wounds, for freedom's sake. "They don't realize how much like Jesus they are," I thought. Suddenly, my mind filled with a myriad of ways that the Savior resembles an Airborne Ranger. The ideas came so quickly that I nearly pulled over to write them down. Then, as if Someone put the thought in my head, I imagined these ideas in a book.  When I deployed two months later, I dedicated myself to getting these ideas onto paper.  "Jesus Was an Airborne Ranger" -- or JWAR, for short -- was the result. It all seems appropriate: this book was born during a Ranger training mission, then written on a combat deployment alongside these fierce warriors. It is a Ranger book through and through. But more, it is God's story and I am honored to have a part in telling it.

I saw this book in my Moody Bible Institute devotional book one month and decided to try it. I was a little leery but it turned out to be a really good analysis of Jesus' character as a leader on a mission. Because the author was a Ranger, he used the analogy all throughout the book. At the end of each chapter he applied the mission to us and what we should be doing .as Jesus' Ranger patrol. The apostle Paul wrote about our lives as Christians as being in a spiritual battle in Ephesians, so I thought this book was a really great platform to demonstrate that idea as well as give us more insight into Jesus. As I read it I also thought this would be a good book to give to a military man who might be on the cusp of a spiritual decision to become a believer. I guess in my life I saw more of the shepherd Christ and didn't give much thought to the warrior Christ. It is also convicting to see that I haven't always stayed on mission in my life. I highly recommend it. You don't have to know a lot of military stuff to get something out of it as he explains everything as you go. He also gives real life examples
As a Christian who served 30 years in the Army as a field artilleryman with 13 years overseas, including a tour in Vietnam, I have often reflected on the sacrificial service of our military personnel. I think about my Citadel classmates who were KIA in Vietnam everyday. I mourn their loss but give praise and thanks for their good and faithful service to our country.Chaplain McDougall has written a well-crafted book clearly showing that the risen Lord we serve was no wimp and modeled many of the leadership qualities that the military values in officers and NCOs.Several statements in the book resonated strongly with me:"The soldier, above all other men, is required to practice the greatest act of religious training - sacrifice.""The church has plenty of lukewarm Christians ... God is looking for true warriors...""Rangers have their handbook. All of us have God's Word. And neither book is any good unless we know the contents and put them to work in our lives."I read this book on my IPad and was moved to order five hard copy versions to give to young military personnel and our pastor (a retired Army colonel and chaplain). Christians and military personnel should make this volume a part of their professional library.
There are enough books on religion to maintain a thriving publishing industry and confuse even the most educated theologian. JWAR focuses on a simple message. It is in Soldier language using examples to which they can relate. Most Soldiers, and many civilians, at least sublimely, want to be Airborne Rangers. Linking Jesus’s character and mission to the Rangers might bring them closer to a better understanding of Christ. The unique experience John McDougall has as an infantryman and pastor in combat in an elite organization makes him distinctively qualified to spread Christian beliefs in this fashion. I remember singing, "Jesus was an Airborne Ranger..." (and doing a lot of praying) while at Ranger School; too bad PC took over.
Using Ranger analogies Chaplain John McDougall teaches us about the nature of the man Jesus, by drawing a parallel between the mission of Jesus Christ which was to rescue man from sin—to steal us away from the enemy because we are captive to sin—and a military mission. We are being held behind enemy lines! And without Jesus' rescue there is no salvation—eternal life with Jesus in heaven, when this life ends.Jesus chose to leave his home in heaven to rescue us—with foreknowledge (since He is omniscient) that He would be accused, and that furthermore, even though blameless, He would be excoriated and tortured thus suffering a horrible and humiliating punishment that we deserve, and that His sacrifice would ultimately cost His life. McDougall uses Ranger analogies to explain the character of the man Jesus—a man who was incredibly brave, principled, and unafraid (page 167). Jesus was not, could not have been, a docile or spineless man to have accomplished what He accomplished when he uttered the words from the cross “It is finishedâ€. (Military speak for “Mission Accomplishedâ€)One point I would add to this book (and I can do this because I am not, and my family is not, connected in a direct manner to any branch of the military)—a point not included by the author—our nation's military also volunteers to serve and protect our nation and its citizens. Our military men and women (and their families) sacrifice years of service, and thousands have given their all, their very lives, in performing the duty they chose to serve and protect us. Our precious freedoms are protected by a selfless military, whether or not we consciously appreciate their sacrifice, or merely take it for granted, or (sadly, for a few) choose to denigrate what they do for us. I dare say that Jesus Himself looks on these warriors with special favor.
I read this book and was able to take a completely new look a Jesus and how he impacted the world. It was a view that I had not considered and had never heard taught before. I have recommended it to friends and would recommend it to anyone that wants to know they are following a man of action and purpose rather than the passive Jesus that is often discussed.
This book gives a look at Jesus that can be appreciated by everyone. As a retired soldier, I can relate to a MOH caliber Jesus, instead of the soft and gentle Sunday School Jesus. Thank you Chaplain John McDougall for challenging my preconceived notions of who Jesus Christ really was and is today. He's not only the Jesus who goes into the lions den beside me when trials arise, but the Standing in the Gap Jesus who truly cares for each one of us and is waiting to catch us when we fall, if we only call his name.
Easy read with very straight forward points. Worth the time and energy to read and sheds a new light/ opinion on the life of Christ.Well written and worth keeping on you bookshelf for a re-read in the years to come.
