Grade 7-9-- Because Morgan preferred to let her work speak for her, the first substantial biography of her ( Julia Morgan, Architect Abbeville Pr, 1988 by Sara Holmes Boutelle) wasn't written until 30 years after her death. Thus, it may be somewhat remarkable--and unfortunate--that two biographies for young readers so similar in content have been published in the same year. Either would be valuable but few libraries will need both. Wadsworth capably traces Morgan's unprecedented accomplishments, emphasizing her professional life a bit more than Cary James does in Julia Morgan (Chelsea House, 1990). There is some duplication of the black-and-white illustrations, but in Wadsworth's book, the photographs are cropped more closely and the reproduction is better. Several full-color photographs, which more adequately reflect the splendor of William Randolph Hearst's San Simeon, are also included. Those interested in further reading will find a mixed assortment of adult and juvenile books, including Boutelle's extensive study and several general books on architecture. Extremely deserving in her own right, and long overdue for international recognition like this, she is also the first woman to be so honored since the AIA began bestowing this medal in 1907. I read this aloud to my nine-year-old, who wants to be an architect. Julia Morgan is the kind of figure I wish kids learned more about in school. Her story told us about changes in the roles of women, the value of hard work, the history of California, and so much more. The writing could have been more engaging at times, but the subject was great and it made for fun bedtime reading.

This was a quick read with lots of good biographical information. For her time, Julia was quite the mover and shaker in a very quiet and unassuming way. If you like California history, women's issues or architecture, I believe you will find this a good read.

Everything fine

Children's history book.

This was a gift to replace the one my grandma had, that I lost. She loved it! And it wasn't expensive either. Great deal!

This book is written at a younger reader level, (for a teen), but still, very informative and great pictures as well.

The book was shorter and smaller than what I expected. After visiting Hearst Castle last year and hearing about this architect, I wanted to learn more. I think that there are better books out there.
