DR. LOUIS HABER had a long and distinguished career teaching science. An adjunct professor at Pace University and Lehman College, he held graduate degrees in both science and education. He died in 1988.

I bought this book for my 6th grade science students. It pairs nicely with another book that provides shorter excerpts of names found in this book. My intention is to teach my students about African American, Hispanic and Asian scientists as well as women scientist of all races. I grew up only being taught about caucasian male scientists... times have changed.PROS: There are 7 inventors and 7 scientists. Each African American male is written about in great detail for about 10-20 pages, and there are photo(s) of each person. Scanned documents, such as official letters and handdrawn illustrations of inventions, are especially nice. Footnotes include credible sources with a bibliography at the back.CONS: There are no women in the book. I hope that if this book is revised, Louis Haber includes women (plural).

If you think black people never contributed anything significant to the world because all through out school you received a eurocentric education then read this book and receive a reality check. Louis Haber does a good job telling the story of black scientists and inventors but there are so many more great black men and women that deserve recognition and praise as well. However, this book is still a good starting point for those who are ignorant about black history.

It was a short read. a compilation of interesting stories . I just wish there was more info about some of them, their personal story interested me most. I pass the book along to my little brother.Its an easy read for him but iI think Its a book filled with perfect examples how throughout history people have overcome adversity and still gave their all to accomplish their dreamsand their passions. Much respect to the inventors showcased in this book!

It is difficult to find a book in black history dedicated just to STEM. This is a wonderful book and I will definitely keep it in our collection. I also liked it because it was not too elementary for an advanced 5th grader. It was essential for my son's project. Definitely worth the money.

This book is Ok. I expected more inventors along with better wrtten explanations of the invention.

I purchased this book for my 10yr old daughter in attempt to begin to educate her about Black History. While I appreciate the history lessons that are taught in our schools, I feel the need for our children of color to know OUR history as well. Since KNOWLEDGE IS POWER then its up to us as parents to empower our children with as much knowledge as we can.

Great read! Easy read

i first found this at the thomas edison museum gift shop - wonderful stories of so many unknowns - must have for teachers, parents, and everyone who wants to know about american inventors rarely covered elsewhere.
