Plodding through a detailed animal-classification system quickly becomes a bit, er, dry, so readers looking for lively nature stories would be wise to avoid this particular volume, as the quasi-mythological nature of its subject does little to spice things up. Even such unlikely beasts as Great Sea Centipedes or Waterhorses (of which Nessie may be the most well-known example) are handled primarily in such clinical terms as size, range and likely habitat, supplemented with brief and surprisingly dreary "descriptive incidents" and eyewitness accounts. Heavy on methodology and light on the mystery and excitement of the best nature writing, this book may spark in readers the sense that the authors were more worried about the criticism of their peers than about the drowsiness of their readers. I love sea serpents and lake monsters so much. I doubt I would if I ever had a close encounter with one, though. That's why I lay down in the comfort of my own bed and read about other people's harrowing encounters and smile quietly to myself. Yes....I recommend.

If you are looking for a good overview of sea serpents this book nicely covers it. Each creature is given its own short section that lists witnesses, overall sightings, and history of the creature. This guide is well researched.I could have done without the authors trying to put each creature into a specific category rather than just letting the sightings define the creatures.The lack of photos of these places also detracts from the overall feel of this guide. It would greatly enhance this guide if we got to actually see these places.One part of the guide that I really enjoyed was the inclusion of lesser known creatures that may not warrant a full section. These creatures are listed by state and country in the Appendix.

The majority of information in the volume of this book "Lake Monsters & Sea Serpents" is just a bunch of quotes from previous publications. You are basically reading a collection of portions of other people's work and not reading anything original, authentic or new. I think it was poorly written even though I find the topic facinating. If you're just looking for a gathering of information from other people's research then this is the book for you.

I bought this book as part of my research for MY book. It is very well written and incredibly interesting.

Loved it! Enjoyed reading about Champy in Lake Champlain and other possible sea monsters. Factual, interesting, and not over the top in trying to get you to believe the whole thing.

Good field guide to many known creatures and occurrences but also a few obscure ones and detailed maps of the sighting locations.
