About the Author

JEAN GIONO (1895–1970) was born in Manosque, Provence, the son of a shoemaker and a washerwoman. A widely loved figure in his native France, he is the author of many books, the best known of which, perhaps, are Song of the World and Horseman on the Roof. He was awarded the Prize of Prince Rainier of Monaco for his body of work in 1953, became a member of the Académie Goncourt in 1954, and accepted a seat on the Literary Counsel of Monaco in 1963. Except for a few trips to Paris and abroad, Giono spent his entire life in his town in Provence.

There might be an author of prose who is as lyrical and poetic as Jean Giono (1895 – 1970), but right off hand I cannot name one. Eden Phillpotts comes as close as anyone, but Phillpotts approach to narrative is far more verbose than Giono’s concise, almost simplistic, yet amazingly detailed literature. Like Phillpotts, Giono also infuses his fiction with realism and frequent depictions of people wed to an environment filled with pastoral beauty and hardships. Giono’s writing is filled with thoughtful philosophical insight into life often expressed by his characters or omniscient narrators. All of these qualities can be found in Giono’s collection of short stories, The Solitude of Compassion (Solitude de la pitié; 1932, translated into English by Edward Ford in 2002; 171 pp. in the Seven Stories Press edition with a lengthy Foreword by writer Henry Miller from his book, The Books in My Life, 1969).Giono’s stories are like a walk through an art gallery. Readers will want to stroll slowly as they view the author’s canvases. Some of the portraits are small, some are larger. There are no murals. Most of the twenty stories in the anthology are set in rural Provence in France giving readers peeks at real to life, mostly every-day, ordinary people and their interactions with others and the many configurations of nature which surround them.Many of the stories are extremely short. In these tales readers might get mere glimpses of a character or two or a single anecdote. Yet, there are gems of acumen within these brief narratives and always something to reflect upon much as one will find reading a short poem. Irony, sadness, and a loss of human caring for others hangs like a cloud over “Annette or a Family Affair.” In “Magnetism” men working on the mountainside “trapping animals, cutting trees, reaping the harvest in some lost valley… leave the village for their work” and breathe air without “the odor of having been previously inhaled. The air that they breathe does not come from the gut of other people. It is pure and from the source. It is good on the one hand, but it is bad on the other, given that this purity has to be bought with solitude and desperation.” In “Lost Rafts” Giono compares “the middle of the land” away from the village to the “middle of the sea” with all its vastness where men get lost.The longer stories are more fully developed. Most contain some sense of plot, but readers will still only be given a slice of the characters’ lives to partially sate the reader’s hunger. There often comes from the author a certain sense of humanity’s failure to both their fellow human beings and the earth itself upon which they depend. Giono also often provides readers with a concept, a comment, a thought about life well worth rumination.The collection’s title story, “The Solitude of Compassion,” ends with a sense of irony and parsimonious hypocrisy. Irony as well ingratitude plays a major role in “Jofroi de Maussan.” Jofroi proves to be one of Giono’s most eccentric, stubborn, unreasonable, frustrating, and comical characters in the collection when a man by the name of Fonse goes well beyond anything required of him to pacify the old man from whom he buys an orchard—all for naught. In “Prelude to Pan” workers from rural areas flock to the village for the annual “votive festival” on September fourth which allows men for a few hours, to escape the hardships of their life. Giono wisely cautions, “life is life; go ahead try and stop the flow, you get used to anything, even fear.” A man “made for this land” finds himself stymied by forces beyond his control in “Fields.” One of the longer stories “Ivan Ivanovitch Kossiakoff” has a wartime setting with Giono clearly calling upon his own experience as a soldier fighting in WWI since one of the characters is named Giono. In spite of insurmountable language differences and the daily inability to communicate to each other, a Frenchman and a Russian form an “excellent” friendship.From celebratory highs to heart-breaking lows, Jean Giono covers an amazing variety of human emotions and situations in The Solitude of Compassion. Told in simple, unique, carefully crafted prose, Giono gives readers who love and value literature an experience they are most likely to genuinely appreciate and someone who might be a new literary genius to admire.

The text is not as uplifting as his message in The Man Who Planted Trees.I'm somewhat disappointed but will read more of his work. Thank you.

Gorgeous and rich, in some aspects a nature book, but in other ways a book of people who live in nature. I often found myself, as a story closed, bewildered by its beauty. No one makes me feel at peace like Giono does.
