To the boy Kazin, surrounded by immigrant tumult on Pitkin Avenue so far out in Brooklyn that "even the IRT got tired,' New York (meaning Manhattan) felt very far away. His renowned memoir moves through time (1915-31) in two directions. It goes forward following the beginning of a Yiddish kid's calling to study and understand the older America of Melville, Whitman, and Albert Pinkham Ryder, whose works he first knew in revelatory visits to the Brooklyn Museum and to various tenderly remembered branch libraries. It also goes backward as a grown man's rediscovery, via subway pilgrimages, of what Irving Howe called "the world of our fathers." Kazin remembers infatuation with the mysteriously unhappy wife of the druggist, bouts of ideological fever on the left, the street odysseys of a messenger with a bag of urine samples, and exhilarating emancipation into the world of books. A book loved by many New Yorkers, including this one.

This classic hardly needs my help as a recommender, given how many of Kazin's distinguished fellow writers have praised it. It is a powerful, evocative memoir of the early childhood and coming-to-age-as-an-intellectual of a major figure in American literary history. On his walks about and out from Brownsville, where his parents settled after escaping (unlike most of their relatives) from the Holocaust years in Europe to the Brooklyn neighborhoods beyond and to "the city" (as Manhattan was also known to those of us growing up in Queens), Kazin shares the sights, sounds, smells, experiences, and thoughts of his days. It is privilege to be in his company.

I bought A Walker in the City when the New York Times did a retrospective review of the book. I could not wait to read it, for stylistic reasons as much as for content and was not disappointed on either count. For any New Yorker of the past 50 years, this book will be a nostalogic journey full of recognition and surprises. I am not a New Yorker but I am a devotee of Law and Order and you can imagine my delight when Detectives Lennie Bricoe and Ed Green had to make a visit to Canarsie - the writer's neighborhood.New York City and Jewish life in the 1920s and 1930s are evoked with great affection with a touch of the bittersweet. The mood is a passionate ode to the past, and the prose is energetic and muscular. You feel you are walking the city with the writer. In the memories of famly life and the Sabbath meal, you can smell the food, feel the warmth of the kitchen and the Mother's love. A great memoir, travel guide into the past and a "how to" on how to write.

Wonderful. Dreamlike. Somehow it felt like my life he was remembering when my actual childhood couldn't have been more different. He's some kind of magician or hypnotist pulling you in with words. After reading this, I bought several other of his titles. A Walker in the City remains my favorite.

A wonderful book written or published in the late 50's by a brilliant 2nd generation immigrant. Kazin explores and brilliantly claims the Manhattan of his time.

What a wonderful book this is! It's a memoir of Alfred Kazin's boyhood in Brownsville, Brooklyn, NY in the 1920's when immigrant families who hadcome through Ellis Island in the early part of the century were making a life for themselves in the City, so it evokes a whole period of American History at the same time as it tells his story. He is a superb writer. It's a great read that I think anyone would enjoy.

Mostly I read books as a means to an end and in that spirit I began "Walker". It had received high marks as a model memoir and hoping to improve my memoir writing I began to read it. Only time will tell whether that part of the project succeeded. Meanwhile I thoroughly enjoyed the book as an interesting end in itself. Even with an e-book you can almost hear and smell Brownsville.

Walk along with Alfred Kazin as he learns to live in his tiny tenement in Brooklyn. From there he slowly moves out into the wider world of books and girls and non-Jews. The book has a poetic feeling to it. You won't be sorry if you travel with him.
